Diabetes Technology Network (DTN) Ireland

Welcome to Diabetes Technology Network Ireland (DTN IRL)!

Diabetes technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps and hybrid closed systems are improving the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and slowly becoming a standard of care. The landscape of technological devices is changing at an unprecedented pace from having limited access to CGM and poor awareness of insulin pump therapy only a few years ago to today where there is an unprecedented expansion in access to CGM and the dawn of Hybrid Closed Loop ‘artificial pancreas’ systems.

To keep up to date with this fast pace, a new initiative Diabetes Technology Network (Ireland), was launched by Consultant Endocrinologists Hannah Forde (Beaumont Hospital, Dublin) and Tomás Griffin (University Hospital Galway) and supported by Diabetes Ireland. DTN IRL essentially aims to:

  • be the voice and advocate for better diabetes technology utilisation and uptake for people living with diabetes in Ireland and working with the relevant stakeholders to increase access to technologies in Ireland;
  • learn from the best international guidance and expertise and share best practices with diabetes specialists across the country through guidance documents/pathways on diabetes technology development;
  • support healthcare professionals in the delivery of technologies designed to improve the lives of people living with diabetes and their families, by delivering practical education to healthcare professionals on diabetes technology utilisation.

The long term goal is to make diabetes technology accessible for all people who need it to manage diabetes in Ireland and to have ongoing support from your local diabetes team. To achieve this, DTN Ireland looks to raise the awareness, inform and educate people with diabetes about the benefits of diabetes technology and encourage diabetes specialists to provide access to technology through their clinics.

This year, Diabetes Technology Network (Ireland) and Diabetes Ireland will be hosting a series of meetings nationwide so people living with Type 1 diabetes and parents/carers of children with Type 1 diabetes can:

  • learn about the benefits of diabetes technology and how it will enable them to manage their condition more effectively,
  • learn about the various technologies currently available in Ireland and their benefits,
  • be able to physically see, touch and feel the technology and
  • learn about the latest research developments in managing Type 1 diabetes.

Our hope is that these meetings will empower attendees to make an informed decision in conjunction with their diabetes team on the technology that best meets their clinical needs and fits best with their lifestyle. These meetings will be held in Galway, Cork, Letterkenny and Dublin.

The first of these meetings will take place in Galway on Tuesday 25th February 2025.
