Diabetes Education Meeting: Tralee

Type 1 Adult workshop from 2pm to 4.30pm
This workshop will focus on all aspects of living with Type 1 diabetes. From the emotional impact of diagnosis to the stress of daily living with the condition such as managing insulin adjustment, and exercise to prevent high and low blood glucose levels. Presenters will also focus on the lifestyle issues/concerns people face in relation to avoidance of complications and sick day management, Presenters will also highlight the importance of looking after your eyes and feet so as to recognise the danger signs of developing eye & footcare problems and the importance of having your eyes and feet reviewed at least annually.
Parents & Teens with Type 1 Workshop Stream from 2pm to 4.30pm
This workshop stream will focus on the emotional impact of a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis to the stress of daily living, the ongoing concerns that parents of children face daily – hypos, sick day management & DKA (do’s and don’ts). It will also discuss future concerns on potential health risks and the importance of good management to avoid them. Professor O’Gorman will also stimulate debate on the timing of highlighting these health risks to your child or whether you ever highlight them. Information on carbohydrate counting and food choices around sport and activities will also be provided.
Type 2 Workshop Stream from 2pm to 4.30pm
This workshop will focus on living with Type 2 diabetes. A dietician from Diabetes Ireland will focus on top tips for a healthy weight. It will also look at the impact of Type 2 diabetes on the cardiovascular system, the importance of medications, diet & exercise and explaining the importance of an annual review and what’s involved. Presenters will also highlight the importance of looking after your eyes and feet so as to recognise the danger signs of developing eye & footcare problems and the importance of having your eyes and feet reviewed at least annually.
