Here is a homemade snack for all the family to enjoy, maybe with a cup of tea.
Carbohydrate: Remember to look at the total carbohydrate in the nutritional label opposite and not just the ‘of which sugars’ amount.
Ingredients – Serves 12 Adults
- 400g /14oz. of strong wholemeal flour
- 110g / 4 oz. of strong white flour
- 30g /1 oz. of fresh yeast
- 15g / ½ oz. of salt
- 255ml / 9 fl oz. of water
- 85g / 3 oz. of sultanas
- 85g / 3 oz. of walnuts
- 1 tablespoon of flaked almonds
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C / 400°F / Gas Mark 6
- Mix the flour, yeast, salt and water in a bowl with your hands until it becomes a soft, pliable dough
- Place the dough on to a lightly floured, flat surface and knead for 5 minutes. Put the dough back in the bowl and leave to rise for an hour
- Bring the dough out and mix the sultanas and walnuts into it
- Shape the dough into a loaf, and roll the loaf in flaked almonds
- With a sharp knife, cut a line down the centre of the loaf
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown
- Cool on a wire rack
