Name of Study
The PACE study (Promoting Adolescents Communication and Engagement)
Purpose of Study
It is important that we find ways of encouraging young people to be active in managing their diabetes so they are more prepared for adulthood and to prevent worsening of their health, and the associated costs to the healthcare services. With the help of young people aged 11 to 17 with T1DM, we will develop an educational video and a question prompt list to encourage young people to be more actively involved in healthcare interactions with their doctors and nurses. Once developed, this intervention will be evaluated in a small trial to see if it helps young people to ask more questions and to be more actively involved in their treatment while attending a diabetes clinic at two children’s hospitals in Dublin. This research is being carried out over the course of three years in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, and in collaboration with two children’s hospitals in Dublin; the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

We are looking to recruit young people aged 11 to 17 with T1DM who attend a diabetes clinic (anywhere in Ireland) to join our Youth Advisory Group for the project. The Youth Advisory Group will contribute to the development of an intervention to improve youth question asking and provider education during paediatric diabetes visits. The Youth Advisory Group will be giving feed back to the research team during the development stage of the study. This intervention includes a question prompt sheet and an educational video. This will involve two-three meetings lasting approximately one hour in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin (24 D’Olier street, Dublin 2).
